(A/N: Sorry, I guess my brain decided to make a lot of angst, so I apologize in advance if this isn’t what you wanted anon)
“But, Dean–” Cas started, raising his hand towards his friend.
“No, Cas. I can’t. I’m not–” Dean cut himself off and turned away. “I don’t feel the same.” He finally stated, looking anywhere but at the angel. Cas’ breath caught audibly.
“If this is about Lisa and Ben–” Cas started again, trying to grasp why Dean didn’t reciprocate his feelings.
“NO!” Dean shouted loudly, startling the usually stoic angel. “It isn’t about them, Cas.” Dean looked to be on the verge of tears, which was understandable; he had just lost his brother, after all. Cas had thought that Dean could seek solace in his embrace, and could comfort Dean through his loss.
“Then why?” Cas prompted. Dean huffed exasperatedly.
“Why do you think? Maybe because Sammy’s stuck in hell with those sons of bitches while I’m up here, without my brother.” Dean’s voice caught on the last word, his body slumping slightly under his grief.
“Sam chose to jump, Dean. He saved humanity. He did what he set out to do."
"Well excuse me for being mad about it.” Dean scrubbed at his eyes and hiccup-sighed. “Cas, I gotta go. Lisa’s waiting for me inside. I’ll…see you around.” He raised his arm to clap Cas on the shoulder, but thought better of it and pulled his arm to his chest. “Bye, Cas.”
Castiel watched as Dean stepped back into the house. He wanted more than anything to run to the man he loved, pull him into his arms, and kiss away the pain and anguish that Dean was feeling. But he knew now that Dean’s heart was with someone else.
Cas sighed wistfully. If that was how it was, so be it. He just hoped that his trip to the cage would be worth the look on Dean’s face when he was reunited with his brother again.
(A/N: Sorry if that wasn’t what you wanted! I honestly can’t write Cas very well, I don’t know how to describe a being without emotions as “in love” with another person)
