toppysammy:

So I remember one time when I was rather young, and I was watching TV. There was an animated show on, so I decided to watch it. I had watched it before, and I believe it was a children’s cartoon (don’t quote me on that; I was really young and may be projecting into the past to justify my reasons for watching it).

Anyway, I distinctly remember it being a show about humans and aliens hanging out and their interactions with one another as being a part of integrated society. Inter-galactic would be how I would describe the type of show. The episode in particular centered around this group of girls and a group of guys trying to figure out whether or not the new (student? I believe it was high school) was male or female. The student in question was purple and had no distinguishing features, and was blob-esque in shape. The girls and guys made it a contest to see who could figure out the being’s gender first. They had banners and balloons with “it’s a girl!” and “it’s a boy!” depending on their conclusions. The girls decided to feed the new student a slushie-type drink and watch which bathroom the student would go into, because apparently nobody could finish the drink without really needing to pee afterward. I remember to boys being angry because that was their plan but the girls “stole” it. And everyone watched as the student went towards the bathrooms, but took a sip of water from the drinking fountain instead. They were all shocked and finally just decided to ask the student, and the student said that they were neither male nor female and that they dispose of waste differently than humans did. They had this whole speech about gender and then walked off.

This TV episode really changed my views on gender in my mind and made quite an impression on me as a young child. I was wondering if anyone knew the show it was from and the episode? As an aspiring kindergarten teacher, I would love to be able to have this clip available to show my students.

Please signal boost so that I can find the show and episode please! Thank you all so much!

I found the episode! Took me a few days to find it, and it wasn’t exactly how I remembered it, but I’m glad I found it!

It was from a show called Lloyd in Space, and the episode was called “Neither Boy nor Girl.” I was correct in thinking that it was a kid’s show, and it’s from the 90’s. Here’s the link if you want to watch it: (x)
