Today, it’s “Speak Your Language Day” on Tumblr. Basically, if your language is something other than English, on May 7th you can speak that language all day! You can learn more here.

Last year, we learned how to swear in French. This year, you’ll learn about the names of your
favorite Marvel superheroes in French because yes, during years (and
even now), a good part of the characters had their names translated. Let’s go! (in no particular order)

• The
  Avengers: Les Vengeurs (even if this term is mainly used when talking
  about the comic heroes. When we talk about the movie, it’s Les
  Avengers)
• The New Avengers : Les Nouveaux Vengeurs
• The Fantastic Four: Les Quatre Fantastiques
• The Black Widow: La Veuve Noire
• The Winter Soldier: Le Soldat de l’Hiver
• Hawkeye: Oeil-de-Faucon
• Quicksilver: Vif-Argent
• Falcon: Le Faucon
• The Scarlet Witch: La Sorcière Rouge
• The Incredible Hulk: L’Incroyable Hulk
• Spider-man
  : We used to say “L’Homme Araignée” or “L’Araignée”, but it changed because of the
  movies. Now, he’s Spiderman for most of the French people
• Ant-Man : L’Homme-Fourmi but I have the feeling he’ll become “Ant-Man” for the French the moment the movie hits theaters
• The Black Panther : La Panthère Noire
• The Thing : La Chose
• The Human Torch: La Torche Humaine
• Wasp: La Guêpe
• Doctor Strange: Docteur Strange
• Wolverine: he used to be called “Serval” and even “Le Glouton” but thanks god his name is now translated into “Wolverine” (I’m saying “thank god” because Serval sounds ridiculous in French and don’t get me started on “le Glouton” )
• No changes: Ironman, Captain America, Daredevil, Magneto, Miss Marvel

Speaking of translation, you have to realize that in the 1990′s a lot of the names of Japanese anime characters were translated changed. I’m just going to give you a short list to give you an idea:

• Ryo Saeba (City Hunter): Nicky Larson
• Kaori Makimura (City Hunter): Laura Marconi
• Sailor Venus (Sailor Moon): Mathilda
• Usagi (Sailor Moon): Bunny
• Pelsia (Mahō no fairy Pelsia): Vanessa
• Megumi Ayase (Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami): Chantal
• Toshio Ōtomo (Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami): Charly
  

And it was the same things in some US TV shows where for instance this poor Darrin in Bewitched will stay for eternity for the French…Jean-Pierre! (which doesn’t make any sense because it’s the only name adapted for the French audience in the show) How about that…Same for some Disney characters. We have no idea who Huey, Louie and Dewey are because for us, they are Riri, Fifi and Loulou. Don’t look for Goofy either, he’s Dingo. And finally, the most unexplainable of them all: in the French version of Monsters Inc Mike Wazowski is called Bob Razowski (don’t ask!)

Voilà, you can now read Marvel comics in French if you want to ^^ (even if the names are less and less translated because of the movies)
